BYD has officially teased its first plug-in hybrid SUV for the Indian market. The company, which currently sells only electric vehicles in India, is now preparing to enter the fast-growing hybrid SUV segment as well.
The teaser confirms that the upcoming SUV will use BYD’s advanced DM-i hybrid technology. This system combines a petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack to deliver better fuel efficiency and longer driving range compared to regular petrol SUVs.
Although BYD has not revealed the exact model yet, reports suggest the upcoming hybrid SUV could either be the Sealion 6 or the smaller Atto 2. Both SUVs have already been spotted testing in India over the last few months.
Among the two, the Sealion 6 is currently seen as the stronger possibility. The SUV was earlier showcased at Auto Expo 2025 and received a positive response for its premium styling and modern cabin design.
Globally, the Sealion 6 comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor setup. The SUV focuses heavily on electric driving during city use, while the petrol engine helps during longer journeys.
One of the biggest highlights of the hybrid system is the claimed driving range. International versions of the SUV can travel over 1,000 km on a full tank and a fully charged battery, making it suitable for both daily commutes and long-distance trips.
The SUV is also expected to offer short-distance pure EV driving capability, allowing buyers to drive in electric mode without using fuel during city traffic conditions.
In terms of design, the upcoming BYD hybrid SUV is expected to feature sharp LED lighting, a large front grille, connected tail lamps, and a clean aerodynamic profile. The overall styling follows BYD’s latest global design language already seen on models like the Seal and Sealion 7.
Inside the cabin, the SUV is likely to offer a large rotating touchscreen infotainment system, panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, wireless connectivity, and advanced driver assistance features.
BYD’s hybrid technology could become attractive for Indian buyers who want EV-like efficiency but are still concerned about charging infrastructure and range limitations. Plug-in hybrid vehicles offer the flexibility of both electric driving and petrol backup support.
Currently, BYD India sells models like the Atto 3, Seal sedan, and Sealion 7 EV. The addition of a hybrid SUV would help the company target a larger audience in the premium SUV market.
The upcoming BYD hybrid SUV is expected to compete against models like the Toyota Hyryder and future hybrid SUVs from Hyundai and Kia.
While BYD has not officially confirmed the launch date yet, the teaser suggests the company may introduce the new hybrid SUV in India sometime later this year or in early 2027.
With long range, hybrid efficiency, and premium features, BYD’s first plug-in hybrid SUV could become an important new option for buyers looking for a modern electrified SUV in India.
